St John Fisher students create a bilingual children's book

Marissa Terech and Emma Muchow- Pigtail Publishing

Pigtail Publishing

We are a student author and illustrator publishing team local to Buffalo. We are juniors at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, NY. We share passions for childhood education, literacy, service, and creativity.

Our Story:

Originally, Terech and Muchow planned to write and illustrate one poem for their school’s honors keystone. Terech liked to write in Spanish for literacy improvement and Muchow’s artistic talent paired beautifully.

Yet, when Terech observed a bilingual 4th-grade classroom, she discovered the importance of dual language literacy and sought to inspire students through her poetry. Muchow, while enrolled in a writing and publishing course, learned details on book development, which brought Terech’s aspirations to action.

Expanding beyond their honors keystone, Muchow and Terech developed a bilingual children’s book to share with their community, hoping to empower young readers and encourage dual language literacy.

Emma Muchow

Emma Muchow is also a Buffalo native and a dedicated student-athlete at St. John Fisher University, Studying Media Communications. This is Muchow’s debut as an illustrator for a children’s book, where her passion for art and reading comes to life. Between classes, games, and coaching sports, Emma finds joy in creating artwork using all mediums and is constantly striving to try new styles. Beyond her creative endeavors, Emma treasures family time, the charm of drive-in movies, and the competition of pickleball. Her illustrations in this tale capture the essence of her imaginative spirit, inspiring young readers to embark on their own artistic adventures.
